Day 2
Madrid
After breakfast this morning drive to Toledo which is truly one of Spain's most magnificent cities. Dramatically sited atop a gorge overlooking the Río Tajo, it was known as the ‘city of three cultures’ in the Middle Ages, a place where – legend has it – Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities peacefully coexisted. Horseshoe-arched mosques, Sephardic synagogues and one of Spain’s finest Gothic cathedrals all squeeze into this dense historical core. Toledo’s other forte is art with the haunting canvases of El Greco, the influential painter with whom the city is synonymous. Through the cobblestone alleys, explore this World Heritage city’s medieval architecture. Walk along the fortified city walls after your visit to the 13th century cathedral.
